Australian Chamber of Commerce to be launched in Mauritius

Press Release
Date: July 19, 2018

An inaugural establishment meeting for the newly formed Australian Chamber of Commerce (AustCham) Mauritius was held at Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel on 19 July 2018.

The creation of the Australian Chamber of Commerce (AustCham) is very timely as both Australia and Mauritius step up their cooperation against a backdrop of increasing development on the African continent with Mauritius as an entry point for Australian investment in Africa. Australia has significant interests in the Indian Ocean and is one of the region’s most successful economies and a natural partner to Mauritius in maintaining geopolitical stability in the Indian Ocean.

Graeme Robertson, inaugural President of AustCham said: “AustCham Mauritius will be a significant facilitator for growth in Australian-Mauritius trade and commercial relationships. The inception of this Chamber is timely as there is so much that both countries can benefit from each other.”

Australia’s High Commissioner to Mauritius Ms Jenny Dee said: “I welcome the establishment of AustCham Mauritius as an important platform to strengthen business ties between Australia, Mauritius and the region. The commercial relationship spans goods, services – particularly tourism and education – and investment, but there are numerous opportunities to increase the commercial links to the benefit of both countries”.

The trading relationship between Mauritius and Australia has evolved with time, from Australian food products to more elaborate manufactures, stepping into the services sector with educational institution linkages, sharing of expertise and know-how as well as support in areas such as climate change and environmental research. Mauritius presents significant advantages for Australia in terms of an entry point into Africa from a business friendly nation while Australia is itself home to the largest Mauritian diaspora community in the world.

AustCham Mauritius would help consolidate the commercial relationship between Mauritius and Australia by offering an additional platform for information exchange and growing the existing networks. It’s establishment comes ahead of Australia’s pre-eminent promotion of engagement with Africa with Australia Africa Week including the Africa Down Under Mining Conference being held in Perth from 26 to 31 August 2018.

Organisations and individuals interested to build commercial links between the two countries were encouraged to join AustCham Mauritius with details available on the Chamber’s website at: https://austcham.mu/
