AUSTCHAM AS A FOUNDING MEMBER TO FORM INTERNATIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE FOR MAURITIUS (“ICCM”)

Attended by some 150 businesspeople at Chateau Labourdonnais, Tuesday night marked an important time for Mauritius with the decision of the Australian, South African and American Chambers of Commerce in Mauritius to join together and form an “International Chamber of Commerce for Mauritius” known as ICCM.This initiative will be open to Membership from other Chambers and commercial representatives of Diplomatic Missions which will increase the significance of this landmark mutual collaboration.

Representing the combined Chambers, Graeme Robertson, President of AustCham, described promoting international business into Mauritius and through Mauritius into Africa and other markets as the core element in the work of the International Chamber of Commerce. He advised that the Chambers of Commerce, Trade and Diplomatic Missions play an important role in the introducing of businesses looking to diversify beyond their immediate regions, however with the restrictions occasioned by the COVID pandemic, it is felt necessary to establish a “Super Chamber” to take advantage of the opportunities of a world undergoing fundamental change.

“The ICCM will recognise that the future of Mauritius is not only as a tourist destination but the need to develop as a financial, processing and servicing centre to provide sustainable and solid opportunities for growth within as well as build long-term relationships with other nations as an economic partner of the future. Hence the formation of ICCM as a participatory organisation to support and encourage the companies of its Members in the investment opportunities in Mauritius and its wider region as well as to advise Government branches the requirements of overseas interests.”

The initial meetings of the ICCM will take place in the following weeks and we look forward to working with EDB and Business Mauritius to enhance the message that “Mauritius is open for business”.
